Working Lives Volume Two 1945-77
Hackney WEA with Centerprise Publishing Project
In this second volume, the accounts of work by men and women in Hackney describe a variety of jobs done in the period since the last war and in Hackney as it is today. Each account is complemented by a series of photographs of the person at their work.
Again, the emphasis is on the details of the work done, the rewards and the stresses, building up a picture of how a community produces for and serves its own members, almost in spite of the harsher demands and values of the employment market.
These two volumes have arisen out of the work of the ‘Peoples’ Autobiography of Hackney’ Group, a local history class organised by the Hackney Workers’ Educational Association.
